I can't quite trust my own sentences.I keep rewriting and deleting, asking, "Is this really okay?"

What makes kotone. quiet & rare

Small classes, careful hands.
The three things that set kotone. apart.

01

Working editors put red ink on your draft.

Editors active in magazines and books read every line and respond. The feedback isn't about hitting a template — it's about polishing the voice that's already yours.

02

Eight to ten students per class.

Learning at a face-to-face distance makes questions easy. Two online classes a month and an always-open text room build the habit of keeping going.

03

Your first paid piece, while you study.

Essay assignments for partner media, ghostwriting for company owned media — chances to build a real portfolio before graduation. You start walking as a writer while you're still in school.

4 months, 4 chapters

Four months for your words to grow — step by step.

Month 01

Rehab for writing.

Start by loosening the resistance. A diary or a social post — anything. 100 characters a day. Your editor walks beside that quiet practice.

Month 02

Borrow forms, find your voice.

Essay, column, interview. Try a range of forms to discover the rhythm you write most happily in. One assignment per month.

Month 03

Get covered in red ink.

Detailed editor's notes arrive on your draft. Notice the lines that weren't changed — that's where your voice lives.

Month 04

Write into the world.

Try a partner-media essay or a real ghostwriting brief. Before you graduate, you'll feel what it's like to have your words read by strangers.

From our graduates

The women who began to write.

Mika H.Class of 2024 / Former banker

Feeling that my own words deserved to be read — that was the biggest change.

After ten years at a bank, I decided to make writing my livelihood. At first I didn't know where to begin — I just collected unfinished notes. Four months at kotone., side by side with an editor, finally left me with sentences I could call my own.

Yui T.Class of 2023 / On parental leave

The thirty minutes after the baby falls asleep is the time I feel most like myself.

On parental leave, the empty pockets of time used to leave me restless. I started kotone. as a warm-up before returning to work. Now my newsletter has 400+ readers and I write a regular column for a parenting magazine. Writing turned out to be like breathing.

Frequently asked

Common questions.

About 80% of our students have never been paid to write before. The first month is a deliberate "writing rehab" period; we lower the bar before raising it.
Classes run online (Zoom) by default. Twice a year we hold retreats (Kanto / Kansai), and once a month an in-person edit room in Tokyo for those who want it.
Many students are full-time employees or raising kids. Classes are recorded and the text room is always open, so you can move at your own pace.
Full refund any time before the program starts. After it begins, you can withdraw within 14 days of your first class through the standard procedure.
Free access to the kotone alumni community, brief referrals, and intros to editors — we keep supporting people who keep writing.
Credit card (VISA / Master / JCB / Amex) and bank transfer. Paying upfront earns a 5% discount.
